This is why melatonin is called the hormone of darkness. Some experts believe that the amount of melatonin that your body produces declines as you age. It is believe that your body produces the greatest amount of melatonin by the time you are 20 and by the time you reach 80 the melatonin produced by your body is just 20% of what it used to be. This was the explanation they used to support the fact that older people have more sleeping problems than young people. But recent research has shown that the production of melatonin in your body does not decrease as you age and does not prove the greater amount of sleep problems amongst older persons.
